Writing forward

It's day two of NaNo, and by now, everyone has made a start, right? Right?
Okay, so maybe you haven't hit your groove yet. Your writing muscles are sore and getting those words out is like pulling teeth.
Hang in there! It'll get better soon.

Writing, like anyother muscle, needs to be exercised. Just like you can't just rock up to your first day at teh gym and expect to run a mile on the treadmill, followed by bench pressing your own body weight and then some refreshing advanced yoga, you won't be putting out 3k of pure brilliance a day if you haven't written much over the last few months.

Which is why I think having daily word counts that stay constant throughout the month are setting you up for frustration and failure. Instead, why not build slowly and gain momentum as you get more writing fit?

For me, I'm going to up my daily word count from 1.5k at the start to 4k by the end with a  gradual increase every week.  It's a number that works for me because I know I can write 1k a day even when it's all pulling teeth and painful dragging-out of words.

do you know your comfort word count? What's the most you've ever written in a single day? Do you have word goals every day? Week? Or just that shiny end-of-month crown?

Hey Kiki,

My highest word count for a day is 7409. Lots of word sprints with breaks in between to get that number. Of course, that was a Sunday, with no other commitments.

I'm not sure that I have a comfortable word count every day. Though I know if I'm firing I can write 1000 words in 30 to 45 minutes.

During Nano, I try to get the word count every day, and I try to create a buffer zone early in the month because I know there may be days later where I don't write. But on the days that I don't write, I try to at least think about the story and keep my my mind in with the characters.

Considering the full-on commitment I had to other things for Day One of Nano, I'm very proud that I still managed 1423 words.

Now I just need to aim for a chapter a day, and I'll have about 100ks for the month and a complete first draft.

Let's hope my characters want their story to be told just as badly.

Okay, day 1 goal blown out of the water over here.
4,068 words.
Happy dancing.
I was aiming at 2k so when this hot cowboy came out to play I had to send him to bed. LOL
Yes, you know what I mean, except they haven't made it to bed yet, they're in the parking lot.
Back to it.

Kiki - Thanks!! Needed that, I was disappointed with my word count for yesterday. The most I have done is about 5000, but I never really kept a tally before now so this is a bit new for me.

I aim for about 1,000 a day. It's realistic for me!

I am aiming for 2,000 words a day. Yesterday, writing sporadically between early morning and late evening, I wrote just over 3,000 words. The first 1300 were like pulling teeth. The rest came out much more easily - encouraging. Good luck!

Diane, clearly you're a pro at this. ^_^ Good to see you're enjoying your time with your characters so much!

EJ, don't be disappointed. You've written, that's all that matters.

Now, get back to writing!
