June is Just Around the Corner

Can you believe we are gearing up for yet another 50k challenge?
The call went out and the troops are responding. Yes, once again we have some fearless writers ready to put butts in seats and write or type their fingers to the bone. Oh, did I forget to mention that?

For now, you have a month, to plot or finish your current WIP ready to write or edit in June. I am going to work on two novels I started with Paula Roe’s ‘A Novel in 3 Months’ Blog. I am also editing a few finished WIPs.

While I know we are not suppose to edit what we write during the month, I am finding if I do as my wonderful CP, Heather Brown does, and edit the previous day’s work. My finished draft is a lot easier to edit at the end, and seeing, as I hate editing, I am willing to try anything to make it all easier. The big question for me will be ‘Can I write 50ks working this way?’ Only time will tell.

If you have never done a 50k in 30 Days challenge, you are in for a ride. It is important not to over extend yourself. If you do not think you can write the 50ks, aim for something lower, 25 or 30ks the object is to get you writing, find a comfortable writing routine (my sucks at the moment.

I am looking forward to seeing how you all go this year.

Are We Excited Yet? NaNoWriMo ~ Hell Yeah!!

A big welcome to all our new members for this year's NaNoWriMo.

Are you excited yet? Yes, it’s coming up to that time of year again. It’s an adrenalin rush. Will I make it? What if I fail? Nah, I won’t fail. You know what it doesn’t matter if you do, as long as you give it your best shot and have fun. Now, to prepare you for the epic month ahead here are some tips. If anyone has anymore please add them in the comments.

1. Have an idea of what you intend to write. Whether you’re a plotter or a pantser, you still need to have at least some idea about what genre you intent to write. I’m plotting this year, so that will be interesting. I’m writing book 2 of Cassandra’s ‘Scarlett House Series’.

2. Get your writing space sorted. Make sure you have plenty of room to work. Okay, this may be a mammoth job on my part. My office looks like it’s been a playground area for 20 or more kids.

3. Cook ahead. My slow cooker is getting a good workout this month with easy to re-heat meals.

4. Make sure you tell family and friends your writing times. If they ring or call round for a coffee or chat in those times ignore them, you’re not available. It can be done, I’ve done it. Yes, I’ve been told I’m rude, my reply is, “I told you I was busy.” You just have to be serious.

5. Stay off the internet during your writing time. Facebook, Myspace and Twitter will survive without you for a few hours a day.

6. Turn Spell check and the editing tools off during November or at least the WIP you working on the month. If you don’t you’ll spend half your time editing and not writing.

7. If you reach your word count for the day treat yourself to a small reward. Set major milestones and select a reward when each one is met. They don’t have to be big rewards, a coffee and biscuit or chocolates (okay that will not be one of mine) or a long soak in a hot bubble bath. Anything that will give you a boost.

8. Have your house sorted so there is very little housework to do during November. Or better yet get someone else to do the work.

9. If you are a member of a lot of online groups go no mail on the ones that are not needed or at least go digest.

10. Believe in YOURSELF.

That’s it for me. I hope you have a great November. We’ll have blogs posted during the month to help motivate you and your word graphs will be updated each Saturday. More details on that will be posted on the loop. In the mean time happy planning/organising.

And So It Begins

So here we are day one of the 50ks in 30 Days challenge. How are you feeling? Are you excited? Are you scared? The fear of the unknown. Will I reach my goal? Will my characters play nice and spoon feed me the information I need to get the words on paper? I LOVE IT!

Yes, well we all know I’m more than a little crazy. LOL. My day started with a whimper. I woke up sick and I mean really sick, vomiting (I know too much information) the works. My head was pounding, but I’m not sure if it was because I was unwell or because I have two couples fighting over whose story is going to be written first. Lord, save me from them. So I’ve manage to do some bartering, mornings for one evenings for the other and in between editing. Plus novels to read and reviews to write as well as critiques to fit in around it all.

So far this morning I’ve added 1,728 words to ‘Surrender’, I’m going for lunch now (dry biscuits & water sounds inviting doesn’t it? NOT), then I’m editing.

Remember, that no matter how big your goal, you are doing this for you. Not to write more than someone else, but to satisfy you. There is no point setting a target that you know is unreachable, the only thing that will do is bring you down. The purpose of this exercise is to get you to write something, anything each day and go to bed at night happy with what you have achieved.

Each Sunday, we’ll ask you to post your total word count for the challenge to that date. You can post them here on the blog or on the loop, I know some people have trouble accessing the blog to comment from time to time. What ever is easiest for you. Monday mornings you’ll wake to see your word counters updated with your progress.

If you have any questions at any time just ask, someone will have answer, if not we’ll pretend we do. LOL. Don’t forget the sprints each night in the RWA chat rooms. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to boost your word count.

So how was your first day?

Happy writing.

Writing In June

Can you believe that it is coming up to that time of year again? We have only a little over a month and we will be pounding the keyboards of out computers, fighting against time to write 50,000 words in just 30 days.

The challenge starts on the 1st of June and runs through until the 30th June. It is up to you what your write and how many words you commit to, Normally it is 50,000, but if you are more comfortable writing less that is fine by us.

The goal is to have fun, enjoy your writing while challenging yourself to write faster.

Over the next few weeks we'll have privous particapants come and chat. Some how amazing stories as to what they achieve from this challenge last year.

Before we start anything we have a few things that may help you get your home and life in order.

1. If you are not already a member of the RWA NaNo Goggle loop you cane register here:
http://groups.google.com.au/group/rwanano .

2. make sure you have your housework caught up with, you'll need all the time you can spare to write.

3. Let family and friends know you are planning on spending the month working on your novel.

4. Cook a few meals before hand and freeze them, you'll be surprised how handy they become.

5. Work out what you plan to work on, wether it be a new piece of work or finishe off the WIP that has been giving you trouble the last few months.

There are a whole lot more ideas that will help you servive this month long writing fest, but we'll cover those another day. In the mean time mark your calendars, clear your slat and prepare to write. If nothing else you find freinds and a support network that is hard to beat.

Hope to see you at the starting gate.

From Start To Finish Challenge

NEW CHALLENGE! Who is game to play? The rules are simple just write, edit and submit your novel in twelve months. That’s right, you have one year to reach your goal. This is open to everyone, whether you’re a published author, who would like that extra push to meet your dead line or get that new novel going. If you are unpublished and want that extra something to keep you on track, this maybe just what you are looking for.

Challenge starts 1st November 2008 and runs through to 31st October 2009. The word count is up to you, how many novels you write is up to you. The main thing is to have your butt in front of your computer ready to write on November 1st, to help you achieve that goal at least, we are going to have two months of plot, plan and research. Through September and October we’ll do whatever is needed to have you ready to start your challenge in November. You can sign up for the ‘National Novel Writing Month’, which runs during November, 50ks in the month.

We’ll be on the RWA NaNo loop, to encourage, cheer and hug you no matter what you decide to do. If you’re interested in taking part just head over to the loop page http://groups.google.com.au/group/rwanano/web/from-start-to-published?hl=en for the challenge and tell us, your name, word count goal, genre, and title of your novel/s (if you have one). Hope to see your name on the list.

A Page A Day Challenge

50 ks In 30 Days may have come to an end but that does not mean we can sit back and take things easy. So you've had a week off to get over such a big month, now it's time to get back into writing. Set a routine, have a new goal, reach for that gold ring. Whether it be writing or editing set your goal. So I have a new challenge for you all, write or edit 1 page a day. Now this is not a big ask 250 words, that is all I'm asking of you or edit 1 page of your manuscript. Don't go letting all that hard work you did last month go to waste.

My husband tells me this is what my office looks like. Hehehe.

Here's the link to the groups 'A Page A Day Challenge'

add your goal and each day come back and add your daily total. How easy is that?

Come on ladies fingers back on the key board, let's write.
Each week we will come up with a different challenge, anything that will keep you writing. Get those words down on paper. Anything that will get you to your goal of being a published author.
Happy writing.

Hump Day Madness, So How Ya Going?

Can you believe it? The last week of the challenge is here already. Six days, that’s all we have left. Where has the month gone? It only seems like yesterday that we were starting.

Anyway how has your week been going? Are you happy with the way your story or stories are progressing? We have a couple more cross that 50k line this week. Great going Natalie and Diane, plus we have a few that are very close, I’m sure we will be hearing the ding of cyber glasses being raised later this week. How good is RC? I mean 70k+ this month so far, that woman must have bionic fingers, and very talkative characters. I have to say you all have done so well with the challenge, I am so proud of each and every one of you.

Congratulations to Bec Sampson on being a finalist in the Valerie Parv Awards, great going Bec and best of luck with the next round. Paula said her book signing went well, which was great to hear.

Don’t forget we are going to run an editing challenge next month. So anyone how as a MS or two that needs editing hope you’ll join the fun. Also anyone who may not quite make the 50k mark but would like to continue please stay with us, we will be more than happy to continue to cheer you on, so don’t feel that if it’s the end of the month you are going to be sent off to continue on your own. I've added a 'I'm A Winner' logo on the side panel, so anyone who would like to copy and paste it to their blogs pleses do.

I know you are all waiting to see who this week’s Pin-up Girl is, so I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. This week as my final Pin-up Girl for the challenge this year goes to Ms Rachael Blair. If not for RACH taking the idea suggested to her and putting the call out to us all we wouldn’t be here. We would still be just writing at our usual pace and making little progress. So ladies charge your glasses, and applaud the lovely Rachael. Rach I hope you are so proud of what you have managed to help us achieve this month. Not only have you brought a bunch of women together who love to write. But for many you have given them the chance to realize what potential they have and what they are capable of achieving. We also now have new friendships that have grown over the month. I for one thank you. So my dear Ms Blair, take a bow. Don’t forget to go over and say “Hi” to Rach and thank her for organizing this challenge.

Ladies, You Are All Fantastic!!!!

Well ladies we have had a great start to the challenge. Most of you have exceeded your daily goal. The numbers are looking good and the word counts are growing.

Just remember while you’re writing away each day, this month is about getting the story out there. You can always go back and edit next month. You can add more or take parts out later. Don’t stress if you come to a road block in a scene, move on to another scene and go back later. If you write something and you’re not sure it’s working but it in brackets and deal with it later.

Some of you will find that your character have minds of their own and will lead you on a merry chase. Let them you can always change or move things around at the end of the month. It really isn’t much use fighting with them because they are like children who just whinge and moon until they get their own way.

So we are heading into day two, some are just starting for those good luck, let us know how you’re day finishes up. For those writing for their second day, at least there are words on the paper to follow now.

Here’s a quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald:
‘You don’t write because you want to say something; you write because you’ve got something to say.’

Well I write because my characters won’t shut-up until I do write.

Happy writing everyone. May the Word Fairy sit on your shoulder whispering words of encouragement all day. And here’s hope Miss Procrastination stays locked in the cupboard for the month.

Don't forget next word count update is at the weekend, up to 8pm (EST) Sunday. RC will have a post for you to add your word totals in the comment section from Friday. She will also have a post on Wednesday if you want to drop by and have a whinge, brag or just say "hi" so drop by for that one.

Certificates and badges

I've been tinkering around with the Winners Certificate for our 50ks in 30 days challenge, and 50ks and 30 days are now added to the finishing line ribbon.

It was requested that we have a place for the name of the novel on the certificate so that has been added to this version, and winners of the challenge will be able to request either certificate with details completed.

So that we can recognise each other at the RWA Conference in Melbourne in August, I firstly came up with the following badges. But I don't know - I thought they were a bit ordinary.

So now I've put the exuberance of the racer reaching the finish line on the badge. I hope all 51 of us will feel this way at the end of June.

I will need to know how many people want the badges so that I can order them in plenty of time for the conference. The badge measures 2.2 inches and factoring in postage, I think they will cost approx $2 each.

Combining 50k with the Day Job

50,000 words in only 30 days?

Broken down to 1667 words per day...it seems achievable. Especially when you're on a writing roll.

But sometimes the momentum just won't happen, the demands of the day job are too much, and the family just won't leave you alone to spend time with your characters. (What do you mean you'd rather spend time with your sexy hero than cook dinner?)

Here's some tips that have helpe me churn out 5ok in 30 days in the past and still stay awake (relatively) at the day job.

1. Keep your story and characters foremost in your mind.

- A small and inconspicuous notebook on your desk allows you to jot dialogue, scene ideas or outlines as you think of them (because we wouldn't be doing actual writing while we're supposed to be working, would we?). Your subconscious can do wonderful things when your conscious mind is busy with other tasks. And I don't know about you, but my subconscious mind always wants to escape the day job.

2. Pockets of time.

Seize those pockets of timeto write. 10 minutes at morning tea? Drink and write! Half hour lunch? Eat and write.

It's amazing how quickly the words can add up with little pockets of time.

3. Start your evening session by typing up your day's words.

This will get your head space back into your story. (And you're not breaking a rule - you're not re-reading, you're transcribing.)

4. If you can commit a long period of time to write - do so.

If not - WORD SPRINT! Set your timer for 15 minutes or 30 minutes and write like the blazes. Come online to the RWA group and find some fellow sprinters. Having someone to report too will motivate you.

5. Housework and cooking may all go by the wayside.

Believe me, the housework will still be there in July. Perhaps you can convince other to pick up the tasks when you slacken off and reorder your priorities. However, I find that by word sprinting, I can usually get the daily chores done in between sprints because I'm not spending hours in front of the computer thinking about what I want to write.

6. Write Fast!

Writing fast switches off your inner critic and turns on your muse. There's always time to edit in July.

7. Jump Ahead

If a scene is not working for you or your muse is filing her nails while you try and get those words out of your head and onto the page, jump ahead to another scene. If you keep thinking ahead to another scene, start writing it! Do what it takes to keep your muse amused! Sometimes it may lead to unexpected twists!

8. Turn off the TV

If there's anything you want to watch, then record it and use it as a reward at the end of the month, or a reward when you've hit your goal for the day.

9. A Month of Sundays

Well, we don't have a month of Sundays in June, but we do have five Sundays so one of them has to be a bonus! We start the month on a Sunday so aim to write more than an average day to give yourself a buffer zone for the rest of the month.

Don't do what I did last year Nanowrimo and write the finals 6000 words in three hours on the last night. That was extremely high pressure, and even though I had an online cheer squad, I recommend it only as a last resort.

So there's my tips. I hope they help you.

I'll be hanging around the RWA Nanowrimo Group looking for sprinting buddies.

See you on the track!

The Winner's Certificate

Ta da....

here it is the 50ks in 30 days Winner's Certificate.

I took the background photo in picturesque Nana Glen (by standing in the middle of the road!). We don't get that much traffic. Then took a close-up pic of the 50k sign so I could play around with the image.

It's whimsical, but I think it expresses clearly the nature of the task before us.

If some people would prefer a white background (without the scenery), I can arrange that as well.

At the end of the month, when we have a list of winners, I can add their names to the certificate and email it to you so you can print it out.

And we now have 49 starters....

....can we make it to 50?

A NaNo Journey

Hi All,

I thought I’d share with you my NaNOWriMo journey. First off I should tell you unlike Suzanne, I don’t plan my novels. I get my ideas from different places. Sometimes it might come from a name, a title or an idea. With NaNo it was an idea. My son’s dog Bear had arthritis and last year during winter he got that bad he could hardly walk. Poor Bear had to have a course of needles and he was put on tablets during winter. So you might ask what that has got to do with NaNo. I have a thing for needles, I HATE them. Just the thought of having a needle I break out in a sweat. I had to take Bear up for his needles, I’d sit there waiting to take him in nerves in my stomach and feeling very sick. When I went in with him I covered my eyes so I didn’t have to watch. Sam the young vet thought it was quite funny, but he was very nice. This was when the idea came to me.

What if there was this big, tough hero who had a thing for needles? How would he react when he had to take his dog to the vets because the dog was crippled with arthritis? What if the vet was a sexy as hell young woman? How would he deal with it? That’s where it started and it grew from there. Then I thought, what if said he had inherited this dog form an eccentric aunt? He could have any old dog it had to be something completely removed from what you would expect a horse stud owner to have. So I gave him a Chihuahua, who loved to sleep in a big basket with a big blue ribbon.

For my heroine all I had was a young vet moving to a small country town to heal after the death of her husband.

So I had an idea, this was what I wrote for my plan.
HERO: Hates needles, inherits Chihuahua with arthritis.
HEROINE: Vet recovering from death of her husband.

Come November 1st I sat down at my computer and started to write. My story flowed easily, by the end of day one I had 6,615 words and was happy with how my story was going. Day three and I thought the whole thing was crap. I had 11,524 and no one was doing what I wanted them to do. My heroine, who I had thought would be timid, shy and reserved was turning out to be stronger than I thought. Her Aunt who I had pictured as a sweet caring person was an old cow. And my bloody hero, was not playing nice at all. I had this idea that he would take Ashley (heroine) to bed they would do the horizontal Tango and she would have this big guilt thing going for betraying her dead husband, right! WRONG! Isaac (hero) gets to the good bit, then asks her if this is what she really wants. I’m sitting at my computer screaming NO, NO, NO, NO you are not to do this. Too late, she’d pulled away. No tango tonight. DAMN.

I’d also come to the conclusion that the whole story was CRAP!!!! But I plodded on hoping that it would all work out.

I think my biggest problem was that I didn’t know my hero and heroine. With my other WIP’s, I’d been working on them for so long I had a feel for the characters. I hadn’t planned any of my WIP’s but I’d taken the time to know my heroes and heroines. With NaNo I hadn’t, this is where the no planning was a problem. But there is nothing I can do about that, I just can’t write that way. If I try to write a plan, storyboard etc my characters go on strike and I get nothing.
Anyway back to NaNo.

By day 13, I was half way through my novel, Ashley who thought her deceased husband was her soul mate, finds out he was a no good two timing jerk. I’m like where the hell did that come from? I was getting pretty down, life outside writing was moving in on my time. Characters were not being nice, I hated most of the secondary characters and it was hard to sit in front of the computer and write each day.

Miss Procrastination came round to visit and had me off doing all sorts of wonderful things. Anything was better than having to face this story I was growing to hate. I’d been sick, my mum was in respite and not very happy and I’d hit the saggy middle. Boy did that sucker sag. But I pushed through. I cheated I wrote the end. Hehehe. I needed something to cheer me up. I love the endings where they find their HEA.

So don’t go thinking that you have to things in sequence, you don’t. Just write whatever comes to you. If you have a scene that you think should be somewhere else move it, write it get it out there but move it to where you think it fits best.

By the time I’d hit day 28, I had 47,862 words and had no idea where I was going to get the last 2,138 words from. There was nothing. Diane sent her word fairy over for a visit (Hehehe, yes I was quite insane by the end. Well I was insane to start with, I was just more so by the end), anyway word fairy helped. Before I dragged myself off to bed at 1 am I was finished. I had 50,026 words, and some really good writing buddies. That was the one constant through the whole journey. We were there for one another, through the highs and the low’s offering support.

So my advice for June, If you’re a planner plan, if not don’t put pressure on yourself. If you reach the 50,000 words great. If you don’t, but you have given it all you can, than you are winners. The word count is just a number. This is all about doing the best you can in the time you have, we all have lives outside our writing and sometimes those lives need to be come first. So if you feel you’re slipping DO NOT beat yourself up over it. If you feel like having a rant because things aren’t going the way you want get on the loop or come to the blog and tell us. If you’re over the moon because you have excelled your word count or you have just written the best damn scene you have ever written, tell us. Hell, shout it out, we are all here to help, encourage and cheer. The Topless Table Dancing Tarts may even do the Can Can for you. Hehehe.

One last thing to remember. WE ARE ALL DAMN GOOD, NO GREAT WRITERS.

Hugs
Sandie

The First Challenge

In June we will under take a challenge to write a novel of no less then 50,000 words in 30 days. But before we can get to that stage we need a name. One the enbodies the unique qualities of Aussie writers.

So for the next couple of days your mission is should you decide to the challenge is to vote on a name. Please vote for the name you feel best expresses the aim of the group.

Please be fair, only one vote per person.

In the mean time don't forget to prepare for the challenge tha will loom upon us before we can say cold feet in ice water. Or what ever.
